Alberto Navarro researches human-computer interaction (HCI). Following in the anthropological tradition of “making the familiar strange,” his dissertation examines how smartphone use is transforming many fundamental features of human existence, experience, and performance. He conducted mixed-methods fieldwork in coastal California, with a focus on users in Los Angeles and San Francisco. He’s broadly interested in the phenomenology of human-tool interactions, and how anthropological inquiry can help guide human-centered design.
