First Year PhD Program At-a-Glance

AUTUMN

Courses:

  • Both Tracks-ANTHRO 310G Intro Grad Studies

Funding:

Milestones:

  • Approved First-year Ph.D., Ph.D. minor, or M.A. Plan of Study (form) due by the last day of the first week in Autumn quarter of first year
  • Complete Sexual Harassment Training on or by the last day of the first week in Autumn quarter https://titleix.stanford.edu/gradtraining

Other:

  • By the end of the first quarter, eligible to transfer in 45 or less previously completed graduate course units to the Ph.D. degree in Anthropology

Requirements:

  • One Extramural Funding Application (NSF-like) on or by 15 May in Spring quarter of the first year (Note: intra or extramural funding applications may early have deadlines mid Autumn quarter)
  • Review the Best Practice Reference for Academic Advising: Guidelines for Graduate Students and Faculty

Units:

  • Full time 11-18 (15 minimum). Suggested: at least one or more department review courses (usually ANTHRO 300-level), ANTHRO 444 and 445, 310G, and a Theory course (usually ANTHRO 300-level) as required by track.

Milestones:

  • Approved Pre-dissertation Proposal for summer field research on or by 15 May in Spring quarter of the first year.

Optional:

  • Submit the Department Request for Incidental funding on or by 15 June in the first year.
  • Submit a Graduate Authorization Petition Requesting the MA on the Way to the Ph.D. on or by 15 May in Spring quarter of the first year.

Requirements:

  • Submit the First-year Summer Funding Program Petition on or by 15 May in Spring quarter of the first year.
  • Complete Ethics training during the department-sponsored workshop during Winter quarter in the first year.
  • Complete CITI Tutorial for both IRB and RCR on or by 15 May in Spring quarter of the first year.
  • Submit Graduate Report of Degree Progress and Research Proposal on or by 15 May in SPring quarter of the first year.
  • Request a Determination of Status for Non-medical Human Subjects Research Protocol; or, submit a Non-medical
  • Human Subjects Protocol on or by 15 May in Spring quarter of the first year.
  • Complete three or six department review courses by end spring quarter with a minimum letter grade of 'B+' by the end of Spring quarter in the first year.
  • Confirm Faculty Advisor on or by 15 May in Spring quarter of the first year.

Units:

  • Full time 11-18 (15 minimum). Suggested: at least one or more department review courses (usually ANTHRO 300-level), ANTHRO 444 and 445, 311G (required of the CS track students, only), and a Theory course (usually ANTHRO 300-level) as required by track
  • Complete at least 45 units by the end of Spring quarter in the first year

  • up to $5000.00 department funding (fellowship stipend) based on eligibility and by application, only. No tuition support is given.

Milestones: pre-dissertation field research
