In this paper, I present arguments from my 2018 book, The Erotics of History: An Atlantic African Example (open access at www.luminosoa.org). I use a description of relationships between European gay men and West African men married to local women to argue that we need to rethink the concept of sexuality. I return to nineteenth-century sexology for inspiration to explore the notion of the fetish and sadomasochism, in the context now of the Internet of images, tourism, and postcolonial fantasy.
