Abstract:

Please join a casual lunch discussion about the practicalities of fieldwork and maintaining one’s own well-being in the field. This is an opportunity for students, both pre-field and post-field, to share and talk about experiences in the field that are integral to fieldwork yet are rarely discussed in methods courses. Items to be discussed include but are not limited to: harassment and other forms of intimidation, dealing with the line between “friend” and “informant,” loneliness and alienation, social anxiety, the possibility of online support groups between cohort members, the possibility of keeping a “What to Do?” list with campus resources, and practical advice (including advice on field note taking and how to realistically manage data).
