Department of Anthropology

I've chosen anthropology because it gives me the freedom to examine social structures from multiple perspectives and better understand human experience. As a transfer student, I use my education to understand my own lived experience within larger cultural and institutional webs, while exploring how those webs are fluid and interconnected. Anthropology allows me to ask questions such as: What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to belong? What do extreme examples teach us about the human condition?

I study anthropology because it allows us to make visible systems and social conditions that are usually obscured by institutions, denial, and procedures. The discipline allows to me to understand people as vessels of experience and understand how they interact with issues like housing, education, carcerality, and health. I can learn more about resilience, culture, and history while spending time focusing on the individuals at the center!
